Chapter 19

FREE PARKING

Anna Beth La Rue sat in the office of Senior Agent Muldoon, impatiently waiting for Monica and her team to arrive. When her kidnapper had mercifully released her, she’d tried to call her father. She’d tried numerous times to reach him, only to have his phone go to voicemail. Anna Beth felt it in her gut. She knew that something was wrong, and by the time the police contacted her about her father’s murder, she was already prepared for the news. The Corpus Christi Police Department had been shut down by the NCIS, who in turn agreed to work with the FBI on the investigation.

She and her father had never really been close, but a wedge had really been drawn after the death of her mother. There were whispers and hushed conversations that her father had murdered her mother for the insurance money. When John had found out what people were saying, he’d isolated Anna Beth from the rest of her family. She was intelligent enough to realize that accidents happened, but the problem that she had with her mother’s death was how she died.

John La Rue first laid eyes on Margaret Ann during his first tour of duty. As a young officer, he’d been extremely popular with the local ladies who swarmed the barracks on a regular basis. Margaret Ann was different. She was a professional female and highly motivated. It was extra incentive to John because, unlike most of the women he dealt with, Margaret Ann wasn’t interested in his rank. She was, however, interested in the man underneath the machismo and bravado. After four months of courtship they were married, and a year later, Anna Beth was born. She’d heard the story of her conception so many times that it no longer embarrassed her.

Margaret Ann La Rue exceled in everything that she endeavored, hence Anna Beth’s dilemma with her death. Her mother had been an avid swimmer, so much so that she volunteered to teach children and the elderly swimming at the local YMCA. She was also the head lifeguard. Her parents had gone on vacation, sans a then-13-year-old Anna Beth, to the Bimini Islands. According to her father they’d rented a yacht, rented some equipment, and gone snorkeling. Margaret Ann was diving into the water and misjudged the depth and must have hit her head on a shallow reef. It wasn’t until he didn’t see her surface in a timely fashion that he dove in to see where she was. The official report listed her death as an accident. They also listed the reason as blunt force trauma to the head. In everyone’s mind, even Anna Beth’s when she was angry with her father, that only meant that they didn’t know whether she’d hit her head on a reef or if John had hit her across the head with something. At any rate, Anna Beth loved her father, but she wasn’t his biggest fan.

The intercom in Muldoon’s office crackled to life. “Excuse me, sir, Agents Deitrich and Roth are waiting for you in the conference room,” the voice said.
